THE SHORT ANSWERIn use

Yes, a general AI chatbot is now a useful daily tool for almost any small business, as long as you check its facts. For most people we recommend ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month, because it bundles strong reasoning, image creation, voice, deep research and projects in one app. If you want to pay nothing, start with Google Gemini's free plan.

Millions of people already use these assistants every day for writing, research and analysis, and every major vendor offers a free plan you can try in minutes.

ChatGPT

Best for most small business owners who want one assistant that does a bit of everything well.

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month OpenAI help, Plus ↗ and covers the widest range of everyday jobs of any chatbot we looked at. OpenAI's pricing page says Plus adds advanced reasoning models with GPT-6, more messages and uploads, deep research, longer memory, Codex for coding, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs and a feature called Sites, plus ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile ChatGPT pricing ↗. OpenAI's help page adds priority access at busy times, voice conversations, image generation and file analysis OpenAI help, Plus ↗. In practice that means one subscription can draft a customer email, summarize a long PDF, build a simple spreadsheet analysis and make an image for social media.

The context limits are generous for normal business work. On Plus, the reasoning window is listed at 256K tokens, which OpenAI describes as about 320 pages of input ChatGPT pricing ↗. Scheduled tasks let it run a job on a timer, such as a Monday morning news summary, and projects keep files and chats for one client or topic together ChatGPT pricing ↗. Independent rankings also back up the underlying models: OpenAI's GPT 6 Astra sits near the top of Arena's overall agent leaderboard, which is based on public head to head votes Arena agent leaderboard ↗.

There are real limits. Plus is billed monthly only, with no annual discount; OpenAI's help center says annual billing is not supported for Go, Plus or Pro OpenAI help, Pro ↗. OpenAI says usage limits apply ChatGPT pricing ↗, and like every chatbot it can state wrong facts with confidence. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this guide with results.

Why we like it

  • Reasoning, images, voice, deep research and coding in one app
  • Projects, memory and scheduled tasks for repeat work
  • About 320 pages of input in reasoning mode
  • Ad free, unlike the Free and Go plans

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • No annual discount on Plus
  • Usage limits apply even on paid plans
  • Can still make up facts, so check anything important
Budget pickStarts at $8/month

ChatGPT Go

Best for light users who want more than the free plan for the price of a sandwich.

ChatGPT Go costs $8 a month AI Business Weekly ↗. Compared with the free plan, OpenAI says Go adds more messages with tools, more uploads, more image creation, more voice chats and longer memory, plus projects, scheduled tasks, memory of past chats and file uploads ChatGPT pricing ↗. Its reasoning window is the same 256K tokens, about 320 pages, that Plus gets ChatGPT pricing ↗. For an owner who uses a chatbot a few times a day to write and summarize, that is most of what matters.

The catch is ads and fewer extras. OpenAI's pricing page says Go may include ads ChatGPT pricing ↗, and an October 2026 roundup confirms ads appear on both Free and Go, while Plus is ad free AI Business Weekly ↗. Go only has limited access to deep research and Codex, and it does not list custom GPTs or Sites ChatGPT pricing ↗. If you find yourself hitting limits every week, Plus is the better buy.

Why we like it

  • Only $8 a month
  • Projects, scheduled tasks and memory included
  • Same long reasoning window as Plus

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • May show ads
  • Limited deep research and Codex
  • No custom GPTs listed
Best free optionFree; paid plans start at $4.99/month

Google Gemini

Best for anyone who wants a capable assistant without paying, especially if you already use Gmail and Google Drive.

Google's free Gemini plan is the most generous free tier we found. It needs only a Google account and includes Gemini 3.6 Flash with varying access to Gemini 3.1 Pro, image generation and editing, Deep Research, Canvas, Gems and 15 GB of storage Google AI plans ↗. Google's plan page does not list a limit on free Deep Research Google AI plans ↗, which is a feature most rivals ration or reserve for paid plans. Perplexity's free plan, for comparison, gives one research query a month Perplexity plans ↗.

Google's models also rank well in public comparisons. On Arena's text leaderboard, dated October 8, 2026, a Gemini 4 model (Gemini 4 Argon) holds the top spot and Gemini 3.8 Flash is in the top ten Arena text leaderboard ↗. Note that the free app runs the models Google lists on its plan page, not necessarily the newest ones in the leaderboard Google AI plans ↗.

The limits are the usual ones. Google says Gemini app usage refreshes every five hours until you hit a weekly limit Google AI plans ↗. If you need more, Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month for twice the free usage and 400 GB of storage, and Google AI Pro is $19.99 a month for four times the free usage and 5 TB Google AI plans ↗.

Why we like it

  • Free with any Google account
  • Deep Research with no limit listed
  • Image generation and editing included
  • Cheap $4.99 step up if you need more

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Five hour and weekly usage caps
  • Best models need a paid plan
  • Google's plan page names models inconsistently
Upgrade pickStarts at $20/month for Pro, $17/month billed yearly

Claude

Best for owners who write a lot, read long documents or want to try AI coding, and will pay for more room.

Claude is made by Anthropic. Its Pro plan is $20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearly, and includes the top Opus model, unlimited projects, a Research feature, usage credits, Claude in Chrome and Claude Code Claude pricing ↗. Max starts at $100 a month for five or twenty times Pro usage per session, higher output limits and priority access at busy times Claude pricing ↗. The free plan is limited to five projects and the smaller Sonnet and Haiku models Claude pricing ↗.

We call Claude an upgrade because of model quality rather than price. On Arena's text leaderboard, Anthropic models hold most of the top ten spots, with Claude Opus 5.5 in second place Arena text leaderboard ↗. Claude Opus 5.5 also leads Arena's overall agent leaderboard Arena agent leaderboard ↗. Many writers and analysts prefer it for long, careful work. Hands on testing is in progress, so we have not yet compared writing quality ourselves.

The trade offs: Claude's apps do not list image generation on the pricing page Claude pricing ↗, so you will want another tool for pictures. Paid plans run on a rolling five hour usage window plus weekly limits, and chat shares one usage pool with Claude Code Claude pricing ↗. Heavy users can hit the cap during a busy day.

Why we like it

  • Top ranked models in public comparisons
  • Annual plan saves on Pro
  • Claude Code included on paid plans
  • Team plan for 2 to 150 people

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • No image generation listed
  • Weekly limits on Pro and Max
  • Free plan has no Opus model

Prices and features from each vendor’s site, checked Oct 9, 2026. Prices change often.

Who this is for

This guide is for owners and small teams who want one general AI assistant for everyday work: writing and replying to email, summarizing documents, planning, simple research, brainstorming marketing, and the occasional image or spreadsheet. If you need a chatbot that talks to your customers on your website, that is a different product; see our guide to AI chatbots for websites.

If you only need one specific job done, such as transcribing meetings or answering phones, a specialist tool is often cheaper and better. But a general chatbot is the best first AI purchase for most businesses, because it touches almost every task.

Why you should trust us

We read each vendor's pricing and plan pages and help articles, and checked every price on October 9, 2026. Where a vendor's own page hides prices, as OpenAI's pricing page now does for some plans ChatGPT pricing ↗, we used OpenAI's help center OpenAI help, Plus ↗ and a dated October 2026 pricing roundup AI Business Weekly ↗, and we say so. We also used Arena's public leaderboards, which rank models from blind head to head votes, as an independent check on quality Arena text leaderboard ↗ Arena agent leaderboard ↗.

We have not yet tested these chatbots hands on for this guide. Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this page with results from real small business tasks. No vendor paid for placement, and our picks were chosen on merit.

How we picked

We started with the general assistants most people actually use: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and Grok. We looked at what each plan costs, what it includes, how much use you get before hitting a limit, and how the underlying models rank in independent comparisons.

We weighted breadth heavily. A small business owner usually wants one subscription that can write, read files, research and make a picture, not four separate tools. We also favored clear, published pricing and a usable free plan, so you can try before you pay.

  • Quality of the underlying models, using public leaderboards as a check
  • Range of jobs in one app: writing, files, research, images, voice
  • Usage limits you get for the price
  • A free plan that is genuinely useful
  • Tools for repeat work, such as projects, memory and scheduled tasks
  • Business plans with admin controls for when you add staff

What an AI chatbot can and can't do today

Today's chatbots are very good at first drafts, rewriting, summarizing and explaining. They can read long files: ChatGPT Plus lists about 320 pages of input in reasoning mode ChatGPT pricing ↗. Most can also search the web, and research features such as Gemini Deep Research Google AI plans ↗ or Perplexity's research queries Perplexity plans ↗ can pull together a cited report on a topic in minutes.

They are getting better at doing tasks, not just answering. ChatGPT offers scheduled tasks on Go and above ChatGPT pricing ↗, Claude can work inside your Chrome browser on Pro Claude pricing ↗, and Microsoft's business Copilot includes prebuilt agents such as Researcher and Analyst Copilot business pricing ↗. Arena now runs a separate leaderboard just for agents Arena agent leaderboard ↗, a sign of how new this is. Keep a person in charge of anything that spends money or contacts customers.

What they still can't do reliably: give you facts you can trust without checking, know your business unless you tell it, or replace professional advice. Treat every answer as a capable assistant's draft.

Before you sign up

Start on the free plan of two tools and use both for a week on real work. You will quickly feel which one writes in a way you like and which one hits limits first.

Think about privacy before you paste in customer data. Business plans add admin controls: Claude's Team plan supports 2 to 150 people with admin controls Claude pricing ↗, ChatGPT Business starts at two users ChatGPT pricing ↗, and Perplexity's Enterprise Pro says data is never used for model training Perplexity plans ↗. If you handle health or legal records, check whether the vendor offers the agreements you need; Claude's Enterprise plan lists a HIPAA ready option Claude pricing ↗.

  • Try two free plans side by side before paying
  • Do not paste passwords, card numbers or patient records into a personal plan
  • Use a business plan once staff share the tool
  • Check the usage limits, not just the price
  • Watch for ads on Free and Go tiers of ChatGPT

What to look forward to

The next step is assistants that work in the background. ChatGPT Pro already lists Dot, an always on agent ChatGPT pricing ↗, and Perplexity Max lists early access to a research preview called Brain Perplexity plans ↗. Expect these features to reach cheaper plans over the next year.

New models arrive every few months. A Gemini 4 model now tops Arena's text leaderboard Arena text leaderboard ↗, and we will revisit our picks when the newest models reach the consumer apps.

The competition

PerplexityFree; Pro listed at $20/month

Perplexity is built around web search with sources, and Pro costs $20 a month or $200 a year according to an independent review Asian Efficiency, Perplexity ↗, since Perplexity's help center does not list the Pro price. The free plan allows only three Pro searches a day and one research query a month Perplexity plans ↗. It is a fine research sidekick, but it is less of an all round assistant than our picks.

Microsoft 365 CopilotAdd on starts at $18/user/month billed yearly

Copilot makes the most sense if you live in Word, Excel and Outlook. Microsoft 365 Personal is $9.99 a month and Premium, which adds the highest consumer Copilot limits plus agent features for research and analysis, is $19.99 a month M365 Premium explainer ↗. For businesses, Copilot Business is an add on listed at $21 per user a month on a yearly plan, with a promotional $18 for the first year for existing Microsoft 365 business customers through December 31, 2026, or $25.20 month to month Copilot business pricing ↗, which adds up fast for a team.

GrokFree; SuperGrok $30/month

Grok from xAI has a free tier with tight daily limits, and SuperGrok costs $30 a month according to a third party pricing roundup, more than our $20 picks Grok pricing ↗; xAI's own pages did not show a price when we checked. We did not find a reason for most small businesses to pay the extra.

ChatGPT ProStarts at $100/month

ChatGPT Pro starts at $100 a month. OpenAI's pricing page lists three usage tiers ChatGPT pricing ↗, an October 2026 roundup prices them at $100, $200 and $500 AI Business Weekly ↗, and OpenAI paused new sign ups for the $200 tier on September 10, 2026 OpenAI help, Pro ↗. Pro adds Pro reasoning, longer agent sessions and the Dot always on agent ChatGPT pricing ↗. It is built for people who use AI for hours a day; most owners will not hit the Plus limits often enough to justify it.

Claude MaxStarts at $100/month

Claude Max starts at $100 a month for five or twenty times Pro usage Claude pricing ↗. Pick it only if you regularly hit Claude Pro's weekly limits, for example with heavy use of Claude Code.
