Yes, a free AI chatbot can handle most everyday writing, research and question answering today. For most people we recommend the free plan of ChatGPT: it offers unlimited text chats, web search, projects and limited file uploads, and the paid step up is $20 a month for Plus. Gemini is the better free choice if you live in Google apps, and Claude is the better free choice for long writing.
The major free tiers now include web search, file uploads and memory, with limits mostly on heavy use.- Our pickChatGPTFree: unlimited text chats; uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and memory limited; may show ads

ChatGPT
Best free chatbot for most people, with the widest set of free features.
ChatGPT's free plan gives you unlimited text chats and unlimited chat history, subject to OpenAI's abuse guardrails ChatGPT pricing ↗. That alone sets it apart: most rivals cap free use per few hours. The free plan also includes web search, projects, study mode, a built in browser, interactive apps, and limited file and data analysis, image understanding and Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Sheets extensions ChatGPT pricing ↗. It runs on the web and on iPhone and Android ChatGPT pricing ↗.
The limits sit in the heavier features. Messages with uploads, image creation, voice chats, deep research and memory are all marked limited on the free plan, without exact numbers ChatGPT pricing ↗. The free models are GPT-6 Luna and GPT-5 Thinking Mini, and the fast GPT Instant mode has a 27K token context window, about 12 pages of input ChatGPT pricing ↗. That is fine for emails, questions and short documents, but long reports may not fit. Response speed is also limited by available capacity at busy times ChatGPT pricing ↗.
One more tradeoff: OpenAI said in January 2026 that it would test ads in the US on the free and Go plans, while Plus and higher stay ad free OpenAI, ChatGPT Go ↗. A guide checked in October 2026 lists Free and Go as the plans that show ads SSD Nodes, ChatGPT ads ↗. If ads bother you, Gemini and Claude are strong free alternatives. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this guide with results.
Why we like it
- Unlimited text chats and chat history
- Web search, projects and study mode included
- Limited file analysis and image understanding
- Apps for web, iPhone and Android
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Ads on the free plan in the US
- Small context window on the free fast mode, about 12 pages
- Uploads, images, voice and deep research are limited
Google Gemini
Best free chatbot for people who use Gmail, Docs and other Google apps.
Google's free Gemini plan is the most feature packed free tier we found. With any Google account you get the Gemini 3.6 Flash model, varying access to 3.1 Pro, and image generation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice chats, Canvas and Gems, which are custom assistants you set up once Gemini plans ↗. It also comes with Gemini Notebook and the standard 15 GB of Google storage Gemini plans ↗.
Free use runs on a meter. Gemini limits refresh every 5 hours until you reach a weekly cap Gemini plans ↗. Google does not publish the exact free numbers; it describes the paid plans as multiples of the free limit, with Google AI Plus at 2 times and Google AI Pro at 4 times Gemini plans ↗.
Gemini makes the most sense if your work already lives in Google. Paid plans add Gemini inside Gmail, Docs and Vids Gemini plans ↗. The cheapest paid step, Google AI Plus, is $4.99 a month, the lowest paid upgrade among the big chatbots we checked Gemini plans ↗.
Why we like it
- Deep Research, image generation and voice included free
- Custom Gems assistants
- Cheapest paid step up at $4.99 a month
- Works with any Google account
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Free limits reset every 5 hours with a weekly cap
- Exact free limits are not published
- Gemini in Gmail and Docs needs a paid plan
Claude
Best free chatbot for writing, editing and working with documents.
Anthropic's Claude has a free plan that covers more than chat. It includes web search, file creation, code execution, memory across conversations, connectors to apps and tools, and Artifacts, which are documents or small apps Claude builds next to the chat Claude pricing ↗. The free plan also includes Claude Design, Slides and Docs, and up to 5 projects Claude pricing ↗. It works on the web, desktop and mobile Claude pricing ↗.
The free plan uses the Sonnet and Haiku models only, not the larger Opus models Claude pricing ↗. Usage resets on a rolling five hour window with no fixed message count, and Anthropic says the free plan is meant for everyday questions Claude pricing ↗. In practice, that means a long editing session on a big document can hit the limit, and you wait for it to reset.
An independent roundup from Zapier names Claude its pick for writing and coding Zapier roundup ↗. If you outgrow the free plan, Pro costs $17 a month billed yearly or $20 monthly, and gives at least 5 times the free usage Claude pricing ↗.
Why we like it
- Web search, memory and file creation on the free plan
- Artifacts for drafts, documents and simple apps
- Connectors to apps and tools
- No ads mentioned on the plan page
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- No fixed message count, so limits are hard to predict
- Free plan uses Sonnet and Haiku only, not Opus
- Research and Claude in Chrome need Pro
Duck.ai
Best free chatbot when you do not want your chats stored or tied to you.
Duck.ai, from DuckDuckGo, puts a privacy layer in front of well known AI models. DuckDuckGo says it does not record or store your chats, and that your chats are not used to train models, by DuckDuckGo or by the model makers Duck.ai privacy ↗. It removes personal metadata such as your IP address before passing your prompt on, so requests appear to come from DuckDuckGo rather than you Duck.ai privacy ↗.
Its agreements with model providers require them to delete prompts and responses right after generating a reply, though OpenAI and Anthropic may hold chats in short term memory for up to an hour for caching Duck.ai privacy ↗. The help page names OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral, Azure and Tinfoil as providers Duck.ai privacy ↗. Zapier also picks Duck.ai as its choice for data privacy Zapier roundup ↗.
The tradeoff is features. You do not get the memory, projects and deep research that the big chatbots offer, and DuckDuckGo's help page does not list usage limits. Use it for questions you would rather keep private, and a bigger chatbot for long projects.
Why we like it
- Chats not stored or used for training, per DuckDuckGo
- IP address stripped before prompts reach the model
- Choice of models from several makers
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- Fewer features than ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude
- Usage limits not published on the page we checked
ChatGPT
Best paid step up when you hit free limits every day.
ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month in the US OpenAI, ChatGPT Go ↗. It removes ads OpenAI, ChatGPT Go ↗ SSD Nodes, ChatGPT ads ↗ and adds advanced reasoning with GPT-6, more messages, uploads, deep research, memory and Codex, more complex image creation, custom GPTs and scheduled tasks ChatGPT pricing ↗. It also adds ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile, and Sites ChatGPT pricing ↗.
If you only need more room and not the extra features, ChatGPT Go is $8 a month, but it may still show ads OpenAI, ChatGPT Go ↗ ChatGPT pricing ↗. Claude Pro at $17 a month billed yearly Claude pricing ↗ and Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month Gemini plans ↗ are close rivals at the same level.
Why we like it
- No ads
- Access to GPT-6 reasoning and more models
- Much higher limits on uploads and deep research
Flaws but not dealbreakers
- $20 a month adds up if you only chat occasionally
- Limits still apply, they are just higher

Who this is for
This guide is for anyone who wants a capable AI chatbot without a subscription: small business owners drafting emails and posts, students, job seekers polishing a resume, and anyone who wants quick answers with sources.
If you only chat a few times a day, a free plan is usually enough. If you upload many files, need long documents analyzed, or use AI for hours every day, you will likely hit limits, and a paid plan between $8 and $20 a month will save you time OpenAI, ChatGPT Go ↗ Gemini plans ↗ Claude pricing ↗.
If you need a chatbot on your own website to answer customers, that is a different product. See our guide to chatbots for websites.
Why you should trust us
We read each company's current plan and pricing page and copied the free plan limits as written, because free tiers change often and the details matter. Every price and limit here was checked in October 2026, with links to the source.
We also read independent roundups, such as Zapier's guide to AI chatbots, and news coverage of plan changes like ChatGPT's ads Zapier roundup ↗ OpenAI, ChatGPT Go ↗. Picks are chosen on merit only.
We have not yet run our own side by side tests of these chatbots. Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this guide with results on writing quality, accuracy and how quickly each free plan runs out.
How we picked
We started with the chatbots that independent roundups recommend most often: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Meta AI, DeepSeek, Le Chat and Duck.ai Zapier roundup ↗. Then we compared what each free plan actually lets you do.
We favored free plans that include web search and file uploads, since those are what make a chatbot useful for real work. We counted ads and privacy as real costs. We also looked at how clearly each company explains its free limits, since a chatbot that stops mid task without warning is frustrating.
- A free plan anyone can sign up for
- Web search with links to sources
- File and image uploads, even if limited
- Clear, published limits
- Privacy terms you can live with, and no or few ads
- A fair price for the paid step up
What a free AI chatbot can and can't do today
Free chatbots are now good at drafting and editing text, summarizing articles, explaining topics, brainstorming, simple math and spreadsheet help, and answering questions with web search. Several free plans can also read files and images, write simple code and create images ChatGPT pricing ↗ Gemini plans ↗ Claude pricing ↗.
Deep research, where the chatbot reads dozens of web pages and writes a report, is now available free in limited amounts on ChatGPT and Gemini ChatGPT pricing ↗ Gemini plans ↗, and Perplexity's free plan includes 1 research query a month Perplexity plans ↗.
They still make mistakes. Chatbots can state wrong facts with confidence, misread a file or invent a source. Always check numbers, quotes, legal or medical claims and anything you will publish. Free plans also cut you off when you hit a limit: Claude and Gemini reset on 5 hour windows Claude pricing ↗ Gemini plans ↗, and Gemini adds a weekly cap Gemini plans ↗.
Free plans also tend to use smaller or faster models. ChatGPT's free plan uses GPT-6 Luna and GPT-5 Thinking Mini, while advanced reasoning with GPT-6 needs Plus ChatGPT pricing ↗. Claude's free plan does not include Opus Claude pricing ↗. For most everyday tasks the difference is small; for hard reasoning or long documents it shows.
Before you sign up
Treat a free chatbot like a public space. Do not paste passwords, card numbers, client records or anything covered by a confidentiality agreement. Read the privacy settings and turn off chat history or training on your data if the service allows it. DeepSeek's privacy policy, for example, says it collects, processes and stores personal data in China DeepSeek privacy ↗.
If you will use AI for business, decide where its output goes. A chatbot draft is a starting point, not a final answer, and you are responsible for what you send or publish.
- Try two or three free chatbots on the same real task before choosing
- Check privacy settings and opt out of training where possible
- Never paste passwords or sensitive client data
- Fact check numbers, quotes and sources
- Upgrade only when you hit limits regularly
What to look forward to
Chatbots are becoming agents that act for you. Paid plans already offer scheduled tasks, browser agents and always on assistants, such as ChatGPT's Dot on Pro and Claude in Chrome on Pro ChatGPT pricing ↗ Claude pricing ↗. Over time, features like these tend to move down to cheaper and free plans.
Ads are the other trend to watch. OpenAI now tests ads on its free and Go plans OpenAI, ChatGPT Go ↗. We will keep checking free limits, ads and privacy terms, and we will add our own test results once hands on testing is done.
The competition
Microsoft 365 CopilotAdd on starts at $18/user/month billed yearly
Microsoft Copilot is free on the web, phones, Mac, Windows and Edge, and Microsoft made its Voice and Think Deeper features free without caps in February 2025 Microsoft Copilot ↗ Windows Central ↗. It is a good pick if you already pay for Microsoft 365, but Microsoft does not publish free usage limits, and deeper Office features need a paid plan Microsoft Copilot ↗ Zapier roundup ↗.
PerplexityFree; Pro listed at $20/month
Perplexity is excellent for research with sources, but its free plan allows only 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 research query a month, with no advanced models or image generation Perplexity plans ↗. Pro is listed at $20 a month eesel, Perplexity pricing ↗.
DeepSeekFree chat; API from $0.30 per 1M input tokens (peak)
Zapier recommends DeepSeek for open source reasoning Zapier roundup ↗, but its privacy policy says it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People's Republic of China DeepSeek privacy ↗. We would not use it for anything sensitive.
Le Chat (Mistral)Free; Pro $14.99/month
Mistral's Le Chat has a free plan with basic image generation, 100 plus connectors and up to 5 scheduled tasks, but messages and web searches are limited without stated numbers Mistral pricing ↗. Pro is $14.99 a month Mistral pricing ↗.
Meta AIFree; paid Meta One tiers in testing
Zapier recommends Meta AI for social media plus image and short video generation Zapier roundup ↗. We left it out because Meta does not publish clear free limits on a plan page we could check.
