OUR VERDICT

The Pudu BellaBot Pro is the updated version of Pudu's cat faced serving robot, adding an 18.5 inch advertising screen and front cameras to the familiar four tray design. It costs about $16,000 to $17,000 to buy, or $399 a month on a 36 month plan at RobotLAB. It makes sense for restaurants that want promotions on the robot, but most dining rooms will get better value from the cheaper Bear Robotics Servi.

What the Pudu BellaBot Pro is

The BellaBot Pro is a restaurant delivery and advertising robot from Pudu Robotics. Like the original BellaBot, it carries plates from the kitchen to a table and returns, so servers spend less time walking Pudu brochure ↗ RobotLAB BellaBot ↗.

Pudu's brochure lists a maximum load of 40 kg, or 10 kg per tray, on trays that measure 410 by 500 mm Pudu brochure ↗. It weighs 55 kg, measures 57 by 55 by 129 cm, cruises at 0.2 to 1.2 meters per second and takes 4.5 hours to charge Pudu brochure ↗.

The headline addition is a second screen. Alongside a 10.1 inch LCD, the Pro has an 18.5 inch screen that shows custom images and videos as it moves through the room Pudu brochure ↗. Pudu lists features such as dish recognition that announces dish names, a greeting mode and a crosswalk caution feature Pudu brochure ↗.

What it does well

It turns the robot into an ad. The 18.5 inch screen can show specials, desserts or drinks to every table the robot passes Pudu brochure ↗. If you run promotions, that is a use the original BellaBot cannot match as easily.

Its sensors are thorough. The brochure lists 2 front view cameras, 3 RGBD depth sensors and a lidar for full front detection, with what Pudu calls Omni Sense safety that stops for obstacles Pudu brochure ↗. It uses VSLAM and lidar SLAM, and Pudu says the upgraded VSLAM+ maps a room without changes to the space Pudu brochure ↗.

The monthly plan is good value. RobotLAB lists it at $399 a month on a 36 month plan, which comes to about $14,360 over three years, less than its $16,000 purchase price RobotLAB ↗. RobotLAB says service is bundled with its robot as a service plans, covering the robot, service, updates and a loaner RobotLAB ↗.

It keeps the BellaBot charm. The original BellaBot's friendly face and voice are part of its appeal for family and casual spots, and AP found owners using BellaBots in real restaurants RobotLAB BellaBot ↗ AP via KSL ↗. Hands on testing on our side is in progress.

Where it falls short

Battery life is not published. The Pro brochure gives the charge time but no run time Pudu brochure ↗. RobotLAB rates the original BellaBot for up to 10 to 12 hours, but we could not confirm a figure for the Pro RobotLAB BellaBot ↗.

It costs more than the best value robot. RobotLAB lists the Bear Robotics Servi from $9,990 or $279 a month RobotLAB ↗ RobotLAB Servi ↗. Unless you need the ad screen, Servi covers the core job for much less.

Specs are hard to pin down. RobotShop's product page gives the price but no specs, and Pudu's comparison sheet on RobotShop is laid out in a way that makes the two models hard to tell apart RobotShop ↗. Ask your seller for a current datasheet.

It is a food runner, not a server. Serving robots cannot take orders or hand plates to guests, and steps, patios and tight rooms are hard for them AP via KSL ↗. AP found servers who found robots frustrating and guests who avoided them AP via KSL ↗. The Pro lists a 65 cm path clearance, so measure your narrowest aisle Pudu brochure ↗.
