THE SHORT ANSWERIn use

Yes, AI can now take a lot of the grind out of hiring: it sorts and scores applicants, summarizes resumes and handles first round screening, but a person should still make every hiring decision. For most small businesses we recommend Manatal, which includes AI candidate scoring and recommendations from $15 per user a month billed yearly. If you hire hourly staff, Homebase is the easier choice.

Mainstream applicant tracking systems and job boards already include AI scoring and screening that small employers use every day.

Manatal

Best for small businesses that want AI candidate scoring at a small business price.

Manatal is an applicant tracking system, the software that collects applicants from job boards and moves them through your hiring stages. What sets it apart for small teams is that its AI is included in every plan, not sold as an add on. Professional, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus all include AI candidate enrichment, AI recommendations and an AI copilot that scores candidates automatically, writes job descriptions, summarizes candidates, runs a fit and gap analysis and ranks applicants Manatal pricing ↗.

The Professional plan is $15 per user a month billed yearly, or $19 billed monthly, and covers up to 15 jobs per account Manatal pricing ↗. That is enough for most small businesses, which rarely have more than a handful of open roles at once. Enterprise, at $35 a month billed yearly, removes the job limit and adds workflow automations Manatal pricing ↗.

There is a 14 day free trial and no card is needed Manatal pricing ↗. An AI interviewer is listed as an add on, but Manatal does not publish its price Manatal pricing ↗. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this guide with results.

Why we like it

  • AI scoring, summaries and job descriptions on every plan
  • Only $15 per user a month billed yearly
  • Up to 15 open jobs on the entry plan
  • 14 day free trial, no card

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Workflow automations need the $35 plan
  • AI interviewer add on price not published
  • You still have to buy job board promotion separately
Best free optionFree for 1 active position; AI credits from $30 per 100,000

Breezy HR

Best for very small businesses hiring one role at a time.

Breezy HR's Bootstrap plan is free forever and lets you run one active position or talent pool Breezy pricing ↗. For a business that hires one person at a time, that is a real applicant tracking system for nothing, which beats sorting resumes in an inbox.

Breezy's AI, called Breezy Intelligence, is an optional add on on every plan, including the free one Breezy pricing ↗. It offers AI candidate evaluation, interaction summaries and resume auditing, and credits start at $30 for 100,000 credits, which Breezy says never expire Breezy pricing ↗. Pay as you go suits a business that only hires a few times a year.

If you outgrow one opening, Breezy's paid plans jump to $157 a month billed yearly for Startup, or $189 monthly Breezy pricing ↗. A 14 day full feature trial needs no card and includes 100,000 Breezy Intelligence credits Breezy pricing ↗.

Why we like it

  • Free plan with a real applicant tracker
  • AI is pay as you go, credits never expire
  • 14 day trial includes free AI credits

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Free plan allows only one active position
  • Big price jump to the first paid plan
  • AI costs extra even on paid plans
Best for hourly hiringFree for 1 location up to 10 employees; Hiring Assistant from $99/month

Homebase

Best for restaurants, shops and other businesses hiring hourly staff.

Homebase is scheduling and time clock software for hourly teams that also handles hiring. You can post a job to Indeed, ZipRecruiter, Google, Facebook and Craigslist in one click, filter applicants with must have requirements and screening questions, and track every applicant in one dashboard Homebase hiring ↗. Homebase says job posting and applicant tracking are included without extra charge Homebase pricing ↗.

Its AI Hiring Assistant acts as a first round screener. It asks applicants questions you choose from its suggestions, flags top matches, and lets those matches book interviews on your calendar Homebase hiring ↗. When you mark someone hired, their details move into your Homebase team for onboarding and payroll Homebase hiring ↗. The Hiring Assistant starts at $99 a month as an add on, with the first month free Homebase pricing ↗.

The Basic plan is free for one location with up to 10 employees Homebase pricing ↗. Paid plans start at $30 per location a month for Essentials Homebase pricing ↗. Homebase makes the most sense if you also use it to schedule your team; as a hiring tool alone it is less flexible than a full applicant tracker.

Why we like it

  • Post to five job sites in one click
  • AI screener books interviews on your calendar
  • Hires flow into scheduling, onboarding and payroll
  • Free plan for small single location teams

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Job post boosts cost extra, from $50 a post
Upgrade pickStarts at $299/month, $3,588/year

Workable

Best for growing companies that hire often and want an AI agent to source and screen.

Workable is a full recruiting and HR platform, and its AI goes further than most. The Workable Agent is an AI recruiting agent that sources, screens and qualifies candidates Workable pricing ↗. It runs on credits: evaluating a candidate against your ideal profile costs 1 credit, sourcing a passive candidate costs 2, and a candidate chat costs 10 Workable pricing ↗. Every paid account starts with 3,000 free credits, and packs start at $600 for 5,000 credits Workable pricing ↗.

The catch for a small business is price. Standard starts at $299 a month, or $3,588 a year, and Premier at $599 a month adds texting, video interviews, assessments and referrals Workable pricing ↗. Prices rise with company size across nine employee bands Workable pricing ↗.

A 15 day free trial includes the full Standard plan and needs no card, but it does not include Workable Agent Workable pricing ↗. Credits expire one year after purchase and are not refundable Workable pricing ↗.

Why we like it

  • AI agent sources passive candidates, not just screens applicants
  • 3,000 free AI credits with every paid account
  • Recruiting and HR in one platform
  • 15 day trial, no card

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • Starts at $299 a month
  • AI agent not in the trial
  • AI credits expire after a year

Indeed

Best for businesses that just want applicants, with AI scoring if you pay for Premium Plus.

Many small businesses never need an applicant tracker; they post on Indeed and work from there. Some jobs can be posted free, though Indeed limits the free plan to one post with limited features and can require sponsorship Indeed pricing ↗. Free posts include screening questions and candidate messaging Indeed pricing ↗. Sponsored job budgets start at $5 a day or $150 a month Indeed pricing ↗.

Indeed's AI sits in its paid tiers. Premium plans include AI powered matching, and Premium Plus, in beta, adds a Smart Fit Score from 0 to 100 with candidate summaries, an AI recruiting assistant that asks applicants follow up questions, and automated invites Indeed pricing ↗. Who this is for

This guide is for owners and managers of small businesses, roughly 5 to 250 employees, who do their own hiring without a recruiting team. You might get 200 applications for a front desk job and have no time to read them, or you might hire seasonal staff every spring.

It is not aimed at staffing agencies or corporate talent teams, which need more pipeline and client management. If you hire only once every year or two, a free job post plus a careful read of the applications may be all you need.

Why you should trust us

We read each vendor's pricing and feature pages and checked every price on October 9, 2026. Where a vendor hides a price behind a calculator or a sales call, we say so. Every fact links to its source.

We have not yet tested these tools hands on for this guide. Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this page with results from posting real roles and screening sample applicants. No vendor paid for placement, and our picks were chosen on merit.

How we picked

We started with applicant tracking systems that publish prices for small businesses, then added the job board and hourly hiring tools that small employers already use. We cut tools aimed only at large enterprises or staffing agencies.

We weighed how much AI you get for the money. Some tools include AI in the base price; others sell it as credits or add ons. For a business that hires a few times a year, pay as you go AI can be cheaper than a higher plan.

  • Published pricing that a small business can afford
  • AI that scores, summarizes or screens applicants today
  • Posts to major job boards like Indeed
  • A free plan or free trial
  • A person makes the final decision
  • Easy enough to set up without IT help

What AI recruiting tools can and can't do today

AI is good at the volume problem. It can rank a pile of applicants against your job, summarize each resume, and point out gaps, as Manatal's AI copilot does Manatal pricing ↗. It can ask every applicant the same screening questions and flag the best matches, like Homebase's Hiring Assistant Homebase hiring ↗. Workable's agent can go further and find passive candidates who never applied Workable pricing ↗.

AI also writes. Manatal generates job descriptions Manatal pricing ↗, and any general AI chatbot can draft a job post or a polite rejection email in seconds.

What AI cannot do is judge fit the way you do, or guarantee it is fair. Scores reflect the profile you give it and the data it learned from. Use AI to sort and summarize, then read the top applicants yourself and interview people, not scores.

Before you sign up

Check the law where you hire. New York City's Local Law 144 bans employers from using an automated employment decision tool unless it had a bias audit within the past year, the audit summary is public, and candidates get notice NYC AEDT law ↗. The city says notice must come 10 business days before the tool is used, and it has enforced the law since July 5, 2023 NYC AEDT law ↗. Other states and cities are writing similar rules, so ask each vendor about bias audits.

Then count the real cost. AI credits, job board boosts and add ons can cost more than the base plan. Workable's credits expire after a year Workable pricing ↗, while Breezy's do not Breezy pricing ↗. Plan your hiring for the next 12 months before you buy.

  • Ask the vendor for its bias audit or fairness testing
  • Tell candidates when AI screens their application
  • Keep a person in charge of every rejection and offer
  • Count job board sponsorship separately from software
  • Check whether AI credits expire
  • Use the free trial on a real opening

What to look forward to

Recruiting AI is moving from scoring to doing. Workable's agent already sources and chats with candidates Workable pricing ↗, Indeed's assistant asks applicants follow up questions and sends invites automatically Indeed pricing ↗, and Manatal lists an AI interviewer add on Manatal pricing ↗. Expect more tools to run the whole first round on their own.

Manatal also offers a connection that lets ChatGPT, Claude and other AI assistants read your account data on its top plan Manatal pricing ↗, so you may soon ask your everyday AI assistant who your best applicants are. Rules on automated hiring will keep tightening alongside these features. We will update this guide as tools and laws change.
