Zoom's built in AI, long called AI Companion and now sold alongside a premium product called ZoomMate, summarizes meetings, answers questions during calls and takes notes. If your team already pays for Zoom Workplace, unlimited meeting summaries come at no extra cost, which makes it the easiest choice for Zoom only teams; the free tier and ZoomMate's $20 a month price make less sense if you also meet on Teams or Google Meet.
What the Zoom AI assistant is
Zoom has two layers of AI. The first is the set of AI features built into Zoom Workplace, often called AI Companion, which summarize meetings, answer questions during a call and help draft text inside Zoom apps Zoom Community ↗. These are included with paid Zoom Workplace plans, with some usage limits Zoom Community ↗.
The second is ZoomMate, a separate product Zoom launched in early June 2026 as part of an AI Productivity Suite No Jitter ↗. ZoomMate searches across Zoom and third party tools, runs workflows and AI agents, and produces finished documents and actions Zoom ZoomMate ↗ Zoom Community ↗. Zoom says ZoomMate is not a replacement for AI Companion, which stays built into its products, though it did retire its paid Custom AI Companion add on on June 1 No Jitter ↗.
Zoom's product page now presents the assistant under the ZoomMate name, with tools such as My Notes for meeting notes, pre built agents for sales, IT, marketing and finance, workflow builders, and connections to Salesforce, Jira, Google Drive and OneDrive Zoom ZoomMate ↗.
What it does well
It is already inside Zoom. There is no extra bot to invite and no new app to install, so meeting summaries just appear for the host Zoom ZoomMate ↗.
Paid Zoom plans include a lot. Zoom Workplace Pro, at $14.16 per user a month billed yearly, lists unlimited meeting summaries and in meeting questions, agentic search, workflows and 8 custom summary templates a month Zoom pricing ↗. Business adds unlimited AI chat and queries Zoom pricing ↗. For a team already paying for Zoom, that removes the need for a separate notetaker.
ZoomMate goes beyond notes. It includes 2,200 AI credits per user a month, unlimited AI note taking, custom agents, deep research and live audio translation for meetings Zoom ZoomMate ↗. Meeting summaries and AI note taking do not use credits No Jitter ↗. Admins can allocate credits and track usage No Jitter ↗.
There is a free tier. Zoom Workplace Basic includes a limited version with summaries for 3 hosted meetings a month Zoom ZoomMate ↗.
Where it falls short
The free tier is small. It covers summaries and in meeting questions for 3 hosted meetings a month, 3 uses of My Notes, and 20 AI queries a month, and Basic meetings are capped at 40 minutes Zoom ZoomMate ↗.
It is built for Zoom. Zoom says My Notes works with third party meeting platforms but does not name them, so check before relying on it for Teams or Google Meet calls Zoom ZoomMate ↗. Dedicated notetakers such as Fathom work across Zoom, Meet and Teams Fathom pricing ↗.
The names are confusing. Zoom's pages mix AI Companion, Zoom AI features and ZoomMate, and the product page did not show ZoomMate's price when we checked Zoom ZoomMate ↗ Zoom Community ↗. The page also does not explain how customer content is used for AI training, linking only to a privacy statement Zoom ZoomMate ↗.
Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this review.
