OUR VERDICT

Grammarly checks spelling, grammar and tone as you type in your browser, email and documents, and adds AI prompts for drafting and rewriting. The free plan is worth installing for almost anyone who writes for work. Pro, at $12 a month billed yearly, is worth it if you want full sentence rewrites, tone adjustment and plagiarism checks; for drafting long pieces from scratch, a chat tool does more.

What Grammarly is

Grammarly is a writing assistant that works inside the apps where you already write. It offers a browser extension for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, desktop apps for Windows and Mac, and add ons for Microsoft Office and Google Docs Grammarly site ↗. As you type, it flags spelling and grammar mistakes and tells you how your writing sounds Grammarly plans ↗.

It has added generative AI on top of the checker. You can use prompts to draft or rewrite short pieces, and Pro includes Docs, an AI document editor, plus support in more than 20 languages with inline translation Grammarly Pro ↗.

Grammarly is now part of Superhuman, and its Enterprise plan is sold through Superhuman Go Grammarly Pro ↗. Grammarly says it has 40 million users and 50,000 organizations Grammarly Pro ↗.

What it does well

It catches mistakes where they happen. Because it runs in your browser and desktop apps, it checks the email you are about to send and the message you typed in a hurry, without copying text into a chatbot Grammarly site ↗. That is the main reason to install it.

The free plan is useful on its own. It corrects spelling and grammar, shows your writing tone and includes 100 generative AI prompts a month Grammarly plans ↗. For many people that is enough.

Pro adds real editing power. It rewrites full sentences, adjusts tone, helps with fluent English and inclusive language, checks citations and detects plagiarism and AI generated text Grammarly plans ↗. It raises the AI prompt allowance to 2,000 per member a month Grammarly plans ↗.

It suits small teams. Pro supports team accounts from 1 to 149 seats, with one style guide, one brand tone, snippets, a shared knowledge feature and team analytics Grammarly plans ↗ Grammarly Pro ↗. A brand tone helps keep everyone's emails sounding like the same company.

Enterprise has strong controls. It adds single sign on, SCIM, confidential mode, data loss prevention, audit logs and bring your own key encryption, with unlimited prompts Grammarly plans ↗.

Where it falls short

The free plan stops short of rewriting. Full sentence rewrites, tone adjustments, plagiarism checks and AI text detection are all unavailable on Free Grammarly plans ↗.

Monthly billing is expensive. Pro is $12 per member a month billed yearly, but $30 a month if you pay monthly Grammarly Pro ↗. The plans page shows $12 without saying it requires a yearly commitment Grammarly plans ↗.

It is a polishing tool, not a writer. Grammarly's prompts handle short pieces, but for drafting a full blog post or proposal from scratch, a chat tool like Claude or ChatGPT does more Claude pricing ↗ ChatGPT pricing ↗.

AI detection is not proof. Grammarly Pro includes AI text detection Grammarly plans ↗, but no detector is perfect. Treat a score as a hint, not a verdict.

Availability has wrinkles. Pro is rolling out gradually and is not available to Grammarly Business or Education customers, or to Premium customers who bought through the App Store or Google Play Grammarly Pro ↗. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this review with results.
