OUR VERDICT

Google AI Studio is Google's free workspace for trying Gemini models, and its Gemini text to speech models are free to use on the free tier, with business use allowed. It suits owners who want free voiceovers for business content and do not mind a developer style interface. It is worth it if you accept that Google uses free tier inputs to improve its products and that free limits are not published as a fixed number.

What it does well

Text to speech is free on the free tier. Google lists Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS, 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS and 3.1 Flash TTS Preview as free of charge on the free tier Gemini API pricing ↗.

Business use is allowed. Google's terms say AI Studio and the Gemini API are for developers building with Google AI models for professional or business purposes, and that Google will not claim ownership of what you generate Gemini API terms ↗. Many free voice tools, by contrast, are for personal use only ElevenLabs pricing ↗.

The voices are steerable. You can describe how a line should sound, such as emotion, pacing and tone, and add inline tags like a sigh or short pause at specific points Gemini TTS docs ↗. You can make single speaker audio or two speaker dialogue with prebuilt voices Gemini TTS docs ↗.

There is plenty of choice. Google offers 30 prebuilt studio voices plus hundreds more in an extended voice library Gemini TTS docs ↗. Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS supports more than 130 languages and 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS more than 100 Gemini TTS docs ↗. The 3.8 models also support voice design and voice replication Gemini TTS docs ↗.

Output is usable as is. Audio comes as 24 kHz mono WAV by default, ready to drop into a video editor Gemini TTS docs ↗.

Where it falls short

Free use is not private. On the free tier, Google uses what you submit and the responses to improve its products, and warns not to submit sensitive, confidential or personal information Gemini API pricing ↗ Gemini API terms ↗. Keep customer details out of your scripts.

Free limits are vague. Google shows free tier rate limits inside AI Studio rather than as fixed published numbers Gemini rate limits ↗. You may hit a cap without warning on a big job.

It is built for developers. AI Studio is a model playground, not a voiceover app, so there is no simple timeline, script editor or one click export like consumer tools offer.

You must be 18 or older to use it Gemini API terms ↗. Some models are labeled preview and may change, and multi speaker audio is limited to 2 speakers per request Gemini TTS docs ↗.

Pricing and plans

The free tier includes AI Studio access and free input and output tokens on supported models, with limited access to some models Gemini API pricing ↗. All three current Gemini TTS models are free on it Gemini API pricing ↗. Your content is used to improve Google's products on the free tier Gemini API pricing ↗.

The paid tier charges per use through the Gemini API, with higher rate limits, access to Google's most advanced models, and no use of your content to improve products Gemini API pricing ↗. For Gemini 3.8 Flash TTS, Google lists $0.50 per million text input tokens and $9.00 per million audio output tokens through December 31, 2026, rising to $1.00 and $18.00 after that Gemini API pricing ↗. Gemini 3.8 Flash-Lite TTS is $0.50 input and $6.00 output through the same date, then $1.00 and $12.00 Gemini API pricing ↗. Gemini 3.1 Flash TTS Preview is $1.00 input and $20.00 output Gemini API pricing ↗.

There is no monthly subscription. A Batch API option cuts paid costs by 50 percent for work that does not need an instant reply Gemini API pricing ↗.
