Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent. It reads your project, plans changes across many files, runs commands and opens pull requests, and it is the most used AI coding tool at work in 2026 surveys. For developers and technical founders it is worth the $20 a month Claude Pro plan; people who want only autocomplete can pay less elsewhere.
What Claude Code is
Claude Code is an agentic coding tool from Anthropic. Rather than only suggesting the next line, it maps and explains your codebase, then handles bug fixes, tests, refactors, migrations and new features Claude Code page ↗. It works with GitHub, GitLab and command line tools to read issues, write code, run tests and open pull requests Claude Code page ↗.
It runs in many places: the terminal, VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, the web, the Claude desktop app, the iOS and Android apps, Slack and GitHub Actions Claude Code page ↗. It supports macOS, Linux and Windows Claude Code page ↗. You can install it with one terminal command or as an editor extension Claude Code page ↗.
Claude Code is not a separate purchase. It is included with every paid Claude plan, from Pro to Enterprise, and it can also be billed at API rates through a Console account Claude Code page ↗ Claude pricing ↗.
What it does well
It handles large, multi step work. Anthropic pitches it for long running jobs such as multi hour refactors and migrations, and says it can work on several tasks at once and flag the decisions it needs from you Claude Code page ↗. Projects group related sessions so you can supervise more than one agent Claude Code page ↗.
Developers have adopted it fast. In JetBrains' 2026 survey of more than 15,000 professional developers, about 39 percent used Claude Code at work, up from 18 percent in January, and 47 percent in the US JetBrains research ↗. Stack Overflow's 2026 survey puts it first among coding agents at 66 percent, ahead of GitHub Copilot at 59 percent Stack Overflow survey ↗. Those are usage figures, not quality scores, but they show where working developers have settled.
It fits into existing tools. It can use MCP servers, such as GitHub, and ordinary command line tools like Git Claude Code page ↗.
The safety defaults are sensible. Claude Code asks permission before changing files or running commands, and its auto mode, on by default on Pro, Max and Team plans, is meant to catch risky commands Claude Code page ↗. Anthropic says it runs locally and talks directly to model APIs, with no backend server or remote code index Claude Code page ↗.
Where it falls short
There is no free option. The free Claude plan does not include Claude Code Claude pricing ↗. OpenAI's Codex, by contrast, is included in every ChatGPT plan, though its command line tool needs Plus or higher Codex pricing ↗.
Usage limits are the main frustration. All plans reset on a rolling five hour window, and paid plans add weekly limits Claude pricing ↗. Claude Code shares one usage pool with Claude chat, so heavy chat use leaves less room for coding Claude pricing ↗. Heavy users often need a Max plan or extra usage billed at API rates Claude pricing ↗.
It assumes you can review code. If you want to build an app from plain English without reading the code, an app builder is a better start.
Copilot is cheaper for autocomplete. GitHub Copilot Pro costs $10 a month, and its code completions do not use credits on any paid plan Copilot plans ↗. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this review with results.
