Yes. AI now does real work for photographers: removing noise, masking subjects in one click, erasing distractions, picking the best frames from thousands and enlarging low resolution files. For most photographers, Adobe's Photography plan with Lightroom and Photoshop at $19.99 a month is still the one to get. If you shoot events, add Aftershoot to cull and edit in your own style.

Adobe Lightroom: our pick
Best for editing: the editor most photographers use, with AI built into every step.
Lightroom is where most photographers already organize and edit, and Adobe has added AI throughout. Denoise removes noise from high ISO and low light shots while keeping detail, on desktop Lightroom features ↗. AI masking selects a person, animal or sky in one click so you can edit only that area Lightroom features ↗. Generative Remove erases objects using Adobe Firefly, Lens Blur adds a portrait blur, and Adaptive Presets suggest a starting look Lightroom features ↗.
Newer features target speed. Assisted Culling filters photos by quality and groups similar shots Lightroom features ↗; Adobe added it in April 2026 and added a Faces panel with eye sharpness and eyes open scores in June 2026 Lightroom release notes ↗. Distraction Removal detects extra people and reflections, and masking got Feather and Edge sliders in August 2026 Lightroom release notes ↗.
The Lightroom plan is $11.99 a month on an annual plan with 1TB of storage and 250 generative credits a month Lightroom plans ↗. The Photography plan at $19.99 a month adds Photoshop and Lightroom Classic and raises credits to 1,000 a month Lightroom plans ↗. The Lightroom plan has a 7 day free trial Lightroom plans ↗. Hands on testing is in progress; we will update this guide with results.
Why we like Adobe Lightroom

Every new account gets a 30 day free trial with full access and no credit card Aftershoot pricing ↗ Aftershoot trial ↗. Who this is for
This guide is for working photographers and photo businesses: wedding, event, portrait, real estate and product photographers, and the small studios that employ them. If you spend more time culling and editing than shooting, AI can take back a big share of those hours.
It is a toolkit, not one product. Most photographers need an editor, and many add a culling tool and an upscaler. Start with the editor you already use and turn on its AI features. Add a specialist only when a job, such as culling 3,000 wedding images, keeps you up at night.
If you mostly take photos for your own business's social media, you may not need any of the paid tools here. The free option below covers most quick fixes.
Why you should trust us
We read each vendor's pricing, feature and release note pages and checked every price on October 9, 2026. Where a vendor's pricing page did not show prices, as with Aftershoot, we used the vendor's own dated pricing article and say so. Every fact links to its source.
We have not yet tested these tools hands on for this guide. Hands on testing is in progress, and we will update this page with results from real shoots. No vendor paid for placement, and picks were chosen on merit.
How we picked
We split a photographer's workflow into its slowest jobs: culling, editing, cleanup and enlargement. For each, we looked for the tool that saves the most time while keeping the photographer in control of the final look.
We gave weight to tools that work with raw files and fit an existing Lightroom workflow, because few photographers will switch editors for one feature. We also weighed licensing, since some AI tools limit commercial use, and the total monthly cost of stacking several tools.
- Saves time on culling and editing
- Keeps your own style and control
- Works with raw files and Lightroom
- Clear pricing and commercial license
- A trial or free plan to test on your own work
- Reasonable total cost when combined with an editor
What AI can and can't do for photographers today
AI handles a lot of technical work well. It can remove noise from high ISO shots, mask a subject or sky in one click, erase distractions and blur backgrounds Lightroom features ↗. It can cull large shoots by checking focus, blinks and duplicates Lightroom release notes ↗ Aftershoot pricing ↗, and it can learn your editing style from past work and apply it to a new gallery Aftershoot pricing ↗. Upscalers can enlarge and restore old or small files Topaz pricing ↗.
AI is weaker at taste. It does not know which candid moment matters to the couple, or when a slightly soft frame is the best one. Generative fills can invent detail that was never there, which matters for documentary, real estate and product work where the photo is a record. Review every cull and check generative edits closely at full size.
Be careful with clients' expectations too. If a tool removed a person or changed a sky, the client may assume the photo was taken that way. For real estate and product photos in particular, keep edits honest.
Before you sign up
Add up the stack. Lightroom at $11.99 to $19.99, Aftershoot at $10 to $45 and Topaz at $29 or more a month can quickly pass $70 a month Lightroom plans ↗ Aftershoot pricing ↗ Topaz pricing ↗. Use free trials on a real shoot before committing: Aftershoot gives 30 days Aftershoot pricing ↗ and Lightroom gives 7 Lightroom plans ↗.
Check commercial terms. Topaz's standard plans allow commercial use only for organizations under $1 million in revenue Topaz pricing ↗. Check how generative credits work in Adobe's plans, since Generative Remove draws on them Lightroom plans ↗ Lightroom features ↗.
A simple way to start: take one recent shoot, cull and edit it with the free trials of the tools above, and compare the time and the results with your usual process. Keep the tool that saves the most hours without changing your style, and skip the rest. Your clients hire you for your eye, so keep final selects and the final look in your hands.
- Turn on the AI already in your current editor first
- Trial culling tools on a full real shoot
- Check commercial license limits
- Keep originals; never overwrite raw files
- Review generative edits at 100 percent
- Tell clients when edits change what was in the scene
What to look forward to
The big editors are absorbing specialist features. Lightroom added Assisted Culling and a Faces panel in 2026 Lightroom release notes ↗, which puts pressure on standalone culling tools. Expect better eye and expression detection and more style learning inside Lightroom itself.
Upscaling and restoration keep improving, and partnerships such as Lightroom's link to Topaz Gigapixel suggest more tools will plug into one another Lightroom features ↗. We will update this guide as hands on testing finishes and as plans change.
